Reductil contains the active ingredient sibutramine hydrochloride.
Reductil belongs to a group of medicines called serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors.
Reductil is used to treat very overweight (obese) patients, who have not been able to lose weight using a low calorie diet and exercise.
Your ideal weight may not be achieved even with Reductil.
Reductil is a medicine used to help you lose and maintain weight loss. It works by making you feel satisfied with less food. It helps control how much you eat. You should still get hungry but feel full with less food than before. By eating less, it should be easier for you to lose weight – even if you haven’t been able to before.
Reductil does not work in the same way as traditional appetite suppressants. It works by altering the level of two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and noradrenaline, which help regulate energy intake and output.
The result is:
1) you will not need to eat as much during your meals before you feel full, and
2) Reductil stops your metabolic rate from falling as much as it normally would. Metabolic rate normally falls during weight loss as you reduce your intake of food, making it harder to keep losing weight. However, there will still be fluctuations in your weight loss as the body uses many mechanisms to maintain your weight. This could be a reason some people do not achieve any benefit from Reductil.
Reductil should be used in combination with a calorie controlled diet and a regular exercise routine, as part of a weight management program supervised by your doctor. If this is followed, you should notice some weight loss by the end of the first month of treatment. If you have not lost at least 2kg in the first four weeks of treatment, speak to your doctor.
The intent of Reductil is to assist with moderate weight loss over 6 months (5-10%) – 9 months for diabetics – when used with a diet and exercise programme, which supports a lasting change in eating habits and behaviour. This is important for long term maintenance of reduced weight after Reductil is stopped. This is in accordance with modern weight-loss practice, which emphasises that moderate weight loss achieves significant health improvement. Losing even modest amounts of weight (5-10% of your initial weight) and keeping it off has been found to reduce risks for diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
Set yourself realistic goals for weight loss and maintenance. Losing weight means changing habits and changing them for good. Your doctor is there to help and give you regular check-ups.
Reductil is NOT meant to result in “overnight” weight-loss. A healthy rate of weight-loss is 1/2 to 1kg per week. Even though some people notice an effect on the size of their meals within a few days, it can take longer for others. Weight loss normally starts within 2 weeks and continues for up to 6 months (although in some people eg diabetics, it could take longer).
Reductil is not addictive or habit forming.
Reductil is only available with a doctor’s prescription.
Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why Reductil has been prescribed for you.
